J & JW Meeks Duchesse At Harlowe-Powell Auction Gallery
When signed pieces of Victorian-era furniture show up for sale, I like to feature them so that we have a reference for the future when similar pieces show up that are not marked by their maker.
Sandra at Harlowe-Powell tipped me off to this signed (probably stenciled) J & JW Meeks Duchesse coming up for sale in their September 19th sale. The Meeks mark is on the underside of the central drawer.
An unusual component of this Rococo Revival Meeks duchesse is the carved female figure in the crest of the mirror. I have not seen that before on a Meeks piece.
More information on the sale is available at their website.

One my favorite cabinetmakers, Allen & Brother from Philadelphia was profiled in the May 1996 edition of the Magazine Antiques and a desk very similar to this one appraised below on the roadshow is shown on page 723.
