Exhibit: Suffolk County's Role In The Civil War

Victorian furniture fans will be interested in an exhibit on display through November 14th March 2010 at the Suffolk county Historical Society. This exhibit is focuses on the experiences of Long Island residents in the Civil War as well as some larger themes of the War. Joan Bogart has helped by co-curating the Victorian parlor furniture display, providing some items to fill out the exhibit. Included in this display are a four-piece John Henry Belter Milwaukee Pattern parlor set as well as a loaned Belter parlor table to complement the set. A pair of presumably Bembe & Kimbel House of Representatives chairs (remember that Doe Hazelton made half of the total chairs for the House remodel order, but I have yet to see one) is paired up with a double desk made by Doe Hazelton. This is a rare set of this furniture, for sure. A pair of Gothic Revival chairs identical to those represented in the Emancipation Proclamation engraving on the wall have been placed below the engraving along with a complementary table.
